Climb the career ladder with J D Wetherspoon

We’re committed to training and developing our staff.

Here are the steps which you may take on your career path...

  • Shift Manager
  • Kitchen Manager
  • Hotel Manager
  • Hotel Night Manager

Timeline: 15 months (approx - 5 months per module)

As a Wetherspoon manager, you will have a key part to play in the pub’s success. As well as being friendly, sociable and having a really positive attitude, you will also need to have strong leadership skills, as you will be managing, leading and motivating the team.

As shift manager, you will run shifts in the pub manager’s absence and will, of course, be serving and getting to know your customers. As kitchen manager, you will have the overall responsibility of running the kitchen and working with your team to deliver our 10-minute service aim. Your team will depend on you for help to resolve problems. Therefore, you will need the skills to be able to analyse and resolve queries quickly.

If you’re applying externally for a shift or kitchen manager position and your application is successful, you’ll be invited to attend an interview with one of our area managers. This will be your opportunity to shine and tell us all about yourself!

Your training and development...

If you are new to the company, you will first complete all of the associate, team leader and shift leader training, in your first 13 weeks. You will also spend 6 weeks in the kitchen to fully understand this important part of the business.

  • If you are promoted from shift leader, before commencing the shift or kitchen manager training, you will need to have completed any outstanding pub-training sections.
  • The shift and kitchen manager training programme is evolving constantly to meet business/employee needs and requirements, so you will have a wide range of training to capture this information.
  • Your training will be delivered through different learning methods, ranging from workbooks and projects, to classroom based training courses and online courses to on-the-job projects covering certain areas and topics of working within a pub. You also have a number of quizzes to complete which sign off your knowledge at each step of the way!
  • Our workbooks and courses look at areas such as marketing, standards, people and finance and have been designed to teach you relevant information and allow you to practise and experience working in our pubs.
  • The projects allow you to focus on an area of the business and monitor, collate, set objectives and drive forwards your pub sales and people!
  • At the end of each module there is a knowledge quiz for you to complete and pass, these quizzes are designed to test your knowledge and skills at each stage of your learning journey.

What’s next?

If you’re keen to progress up the career ladder, then the next step for you will be the pub manager role. You’ll have an interview with your area manager, to find out whether you are ready. If you’re not quite ready, you will work through a development plan to get you exactly where you need to be.
